The Shandong Chapter of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE CIS), led by Professor Wang Jian — faculty member of the College of Science at China University of Petroleum (East China) and Director of the Joint Laboratory for Cross-Media Big Data — has recently received official approval for its establishment from IEEE Headquarters. In a congratulatory letter, IEEE Headquarters confirmed that the chapter complies with the operational specifications of the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board, and extended best wishes for its future work.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a premier international professional body for engineers in electronic technology and information science. It is committed to advancing technological development, academic exchange and standard-setting in electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, communications and related fields. The IEEE oversees a number of technical societies covering a wide range of disciplines including power engineering, electronics, computing, telecommunications and artificial intelligence. Through its network of regional chapters and technical communities, it provides a global platform for members to conduct academic exchanges, technical cooperation and talent development.

As the first chapter launched by IEEE CIS in Shandong Province, the IEEE CIS Shandong Chapter currently has over 30 members, 15 of whom are founding members. They come from institutions including China University of Petroleum (East China), Shandong University, Ocean University of China, University of Jinan, Qingdao University, Qingdao University of Technology and Liaocheng University. Professor Wang Jian serves as Chapter Chair.

The chapter’s founding will strengthen academic exchange and cooperation between computational intelligence experts and scholars in Shandong and their counterparts at home and abroad. It will also boost research progress and talent training in artificial intelligence, machine learning, intelligent optimization and related fields, and build a broader academic exchange platform for professionals in the region.

Going forward, the IEEE CIS Shandong Chapter will build on its role as an academic exchange hub and host a steady stream of events centered on three pillars: frontier academic sharing in AI and computational intelligence, live-streamed academic talks, and international conference organization. It will support the exchange of cutting-edge findings and industry-university-research collaboration in computational intelligence, and remain open and accessible to faculty, researchers and students in relevant fields across Shandong and the rest of China.

Scholars are warmly invited to join the IEEE CIS Shandong Chapter to explore new academic frontiers, pursue research partnerships, and drive disciplinary growth and technological innovation in computational intelligence to new levels.
