Recently, Wang Jian, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor from China University of Petroleum (East China), accepted an exclusive interview with Xinhua Net's Xinhua Interview, sharing insights on core topics including research progress, development trends, discipline construction, and academic exchanges in the AI field.

During the interview, Professor Wang elaborated on AI's development direction, noting that its long-term goal is to free humans from complex data and repetitive work, assist in decision-making, and serve as a powerful human tool. He also mentioned that deep neural networks still face pending challenges in transparency, fairness, and interpretability. The cross-integration of computational intelligence fields and the industrial application of technologies are key current research trends.
Regarding the university's AI research layout, Professor Wang introduced that China University of Petroleum (East China) attaches great importance to related disciplines. Based on multiple colleges and subjects, it has established research institutions focusing on frontier basic theories like image and natural language processing, while advancing demand-oriented applied research. By integrating AI with characteristic disciplines such as petroleum engineering and geoscience, the university provides precise solutions for core petroleum industry tasks including geological exploration, reservoir analysis, and production optimization, exploring an innovative path of coupling machine learning models with professional physical knowledge.
In addition, Professor Wang shared the significance of hosting the International Conference on the Latest Advances in Computational Intelligence and the Belt and Road Frontier Academic Summit on AI. With over 3,000 global participants online and offline, the conference served as a platform for exchanging cutting-edge achievements. It also deepened the university's scientific and technological cooperation with countries along the Belt and Road, boosting the internationalization of its research and supporting the national technological innovation, talent introduction, and the university's Double First-Class discipline development.
